A rapidly growing Facebook group is transforming the way the UK public views British manufacturing. “Buy British” has accumulated
50,000 56,000 followers who ‘promote buying locally, supporting small business and the production and manufacturing of British goods and services.’
Not only does the group discuss positive news about British manufacturing, but it also serves as a forum to help discover where to buy British products.
Followers post questions such as “where can I buy a British made oven” or “where can I buy British made shoes” and are helped by other members of the group to source these products.
British food is also a popular topic and highlights a drive to make the labelling of supermarket products clearer in order to identify the country of origin.
The next target of the group is to hit 50,000 then 100,000 followers. Supermarkets have already taken notice and the growth of the group will put more pressure on them to source even more British grown food.
Morrisons CEO David Potts has urged suppliers to source more food domestically, quipping he preferred biscuits made in “Pontefract rather than Honolulu”. “We sell a lot of British produce,” Potts said. “But we intend to sell a lot more.”
The Buy British Facebook group intends to help British manufacturers sell a lot more too. Buying British is not only better for the environment, but will also help boost local communities and create jobs.
